Migrating to ExpenseShare 2

User Guide Home

Existing ExpenseShare archives are fully compatible with ExpenseShare 2.  To make migration easy, when you launch ExpenseShare 1.8 you’ll be prompted to “Get ExpenseShare 2” – just select this option and you’ll be guided step-by-step through migration:

  1. Choose “Get ExpenseShare 2” when you launch the original ExpenseShare.  If you don’t get this option, go to Settings and select “Migrate Activities to ExpenseShare 2”.
  2. Click “Download ExpenseShare 2” to open the App Store.
  3. Get ExpenseShare 2 from the App Store and touch “Done”,
  4. Select the Activities you want to migrate and touch “Migrate…”
  5. In the share menu choose “Copy to ExpenseShare 2”.
  6. ExpenseShare 2 will launch – just touch “Proceed” and you are done!

Where Are My Migrated Activities?

Migrated activities are put in a folder on your device called “Migrated Activities”.  If you don’t see this you can easily navigate there: touch the “Browse” button at the bottom, choose “On My iPhone/iPad” -> “ExpenseShare2” -> “Migrated Activities”.

You can move these documents wherever you want on your device or in iCloud by opening the “Migrated Activities” folder and touching the “Select” button.  Select the Activities you want to move and touch the folder icon at the bottom of the screen.

FAQs

  1. Why create a new app instead of upgrading ExpenseShare?
Some nuances of the App Store rules made it not feasible for me to continue to offer ExpenseShare for free / low cost, and the only choice was to drop the app completely or replace it with a new app that I could provide for free.
  2. Are my ExpenseShare archives compatible with ExpenseShare 2?
Yes – if you used the “Export / Share Activity” feature in ExpenseShare to save archives or share them with other people, you can now open these archives with ExpenseShare 2.
  3. Can I continue to use the original ExpenseShare?
Yes – the original ExpenseShare will continue to work, and will available in the app store for downloads and updates through the end of 2017.  After that there will not be further updates, but the app will still work.
  4. Why won’t my Google Drive files open in ExpenseShare 2?
Unfortunately Google Drive has never worked well with applications like ExpenseShare that use custom document types.  Since the iOS11 Files app relies on document types to tie files and applications together, there is no way to work around this issue.  We have reported this problem to Google.  Consider using iCloud or Dropbox for cloud-based documents in ExpenseShare 2 – both work well.
